Have you heard about the latest trend sweeping social media and the photography world? It’s called a cake smash photo shoot, and it puts a super sweet spin on those timeless baby milestone photos.

The concept is pretty simple – when the baby turns 1, you set them loose on a cake and let the camera capture the delightful mess that ensues! We’re talking fists full of frosting, cake-covered grins, and a memory that’s way more fun than standard monthly photos.

While smashing cakes has always been a baby’s rite of passage on their first birthday, photographers have started staging elaborate cake smash sessions as a milestone event for the baby book. And let’s be honest, the photos are pretty darn cute. Whether it’s a classic white cake with white icing or a themed creation, little ones go to town demolishing their cake masterpiece.

The best part is the reactions you can capture – everything from curious fingers dipping into frosting to gleeful face-first dives into the cake. And that first taste is gold! The cake smash captures how much they’re growing up while letting them be a baby just a little longer.

Now the trend has expanded to include mom, dad, or the whole family joining in on the sweet, sticky session. Even pets are getting in on the trend with pup cakes and cake sessions. Talk about a family affair!

How to Get Ready for a Cake Smash Session

As a toddler photographer who specializes in cake smashes, let me walk you through what it takes to set up one of these super fun and messy Cake Smash Photo Shoots.

First things first, we’ll need to pick out the perfect cake. I always go for a small 6 or 8-inch round or square cake that’s fun, colorful, and decorated with lots of frosting and toppings. Cupcakes can work too! We’ll also need some cute backdrops for the photo shoot like a fabric drape, a floral garland, balloons, a chalkboard sign, or whatever goes with the theme you have in mind.

On the day of, I like to prep a space that’s easy to clean up after. Plastic tablecloths and sheets on the floor. My current studio just east of Dripping Springs is the perfect place and it’s set up for Cake Smash Sessions. Then I lay out the backdrop and accessories along with some hand towels and wipes close by for easy clean-up between shots.

When the tiny star of the show arrives, we’ll take some portraits first so they look nice and clean. Then once they dive hands-first into the cake, the fun begins! I snap away as they grab fistfuls of frosting, reveal cake filling, and get it stuck in their hair and everywhere. The messier the better! It’s baby bliss at its finest.

After we wrap the shoot, the little one gets wiped down and changed while the parents and I go through the images for ordering. It’s such a blast to capture these memories for families! Those cake and frosting-covered baby faces are just the sweetest.

New Mom’s First Cake Smash Experience

I had a mom write me a letter to me about her son Jimmy’s experience.

Oh my goodness, we just had Little Jimmy’s first birthday cake smash photos taken and it was an absolute blast! I was a bit hesitant at first since I wasn’t sure if Jimmy would actually dive into the cake or just get overwhelmed. But let me tell you, the minute the photographer, Kim, put that chocolate cake down in front of him, it was game over! Jimmy grinded his little hands right into the frosting and started going to town. He was covered head to toe in cake and frosting – in his hair, on his face, all over his outfit. But he had the biggest smile the entire time!

It was so fun as a mom just to stand back and watch my baby experience something for the first time. The delight and excitement on his face with each taste and touch of cake was priceless. And getting to capture those memories in photographs is something I’ll always treasure. Jimmy made the biggest mess but I didn’t care one bit about cleaning it up – that’s what baby wipes are for! The photographer was able to get so many sweet and silly shots of him enjoying his first-ever cake. I know when Jimmy looks back at these photos years from now, it will be a fun memory of what a joyful one-year-old he was.
