Downtown Austin is the commercial center of Austin. It is situated on the Colorado River banks. Austin’s highest buildings are located here and many are still under construction. Downtown Austin was built during the 1830s at the suggestion of President Mirabeau B. Lamar. Designer E Waller conceived the place as a grid placed between Shoal Creek and Waller Creek. He also became the first mayor of the city.

Initially there were 14 blocks built in the area. This lay out is still preserved, though more buildings have been added in the meantime. The main avenue, named “Congress”, stretches between Capitol Square and Colorado River. The other streets parallel to Congress were named after the rivers on the Texas map. Of the four public squares first built in this part of Austin, three are still to be seen.
The tallest construction is the Austonian, measuring 208 m in height. It is followed by Condominiums (172 m) and Frost Bank Tower. On the whole, there are 121 tall buildings located Downtown Austin. The first was Scarborough Building, constructed in 1910. Numerous important buildings are situated on Congress Avenue, which is a significant commercial district.
