Autism Speaks: A Mother’s Inspiration

This month, Autism speaks out! We boldly talk about our struggles, our needs, acceptance and awareness for our Autistic children. If you have a child with Autism, you know how much the month of April means to you. This month means more than just building awareness; this month means sharing my inspiration from one mother to another.

It’s OK to Admit Autism is hard

Autism is hard and it’s ok to admit it. There is no sense pretending we have got it all together when deep down we are screaming somebody help me! It can be so challenging for a mother to come to terms with the fact that she needs help, but it’s OK.

Don’t Deny the Disability

So many times, mothers are told their child has a disability like Autism and they are in denial. Moms it’s OK that your child has Autism. In fact, in some ways it’s a blessing not a curse. Think of all the resources available to your child once they have a diagnosis that not only helps them through school, but through life.

Autism Speaks through You

You know your child better than anyone. When you let the schools, doctors, or other people dictate what happens to your child, you aren’t allowing Autism to speak, your allowing society to mainstream the disability however they feel fit.  Stand up for what you believe in; don’t take no for an answer; and always advocate for your child. Autism speaks loudly when you speak for your child.

You Are NOT Alone

So many parents think they are alone. If you are reading my blog today, I am going through the SAME thing over here. If you feel alone, discouraged, or depressed, reach out to me. I am happy to be a listening ear, bounce ideas off each other, and learn together.

Your Child is a Blessing

Whether you realize it or not, your child is a blessing. My children are what keep me going everyday; they are the ones that give me perseverance, patience, and diligence to keep going. I wouldn’t be the person I was today without each one of my children (including my Autistic one).

Having a child with Autism is tough and it’s OK to admit that. Some days you just don’t know how you will make it through. Some days the thing that has worked for the last year doesn’t work anymore. This blog is specifically for you because we are a group of mothers looking for answers, persevering through the rough times, and advocating for a change. Let us know in the comments what you need help with, and we will do our best to find you the answers.
