4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Fourth Grade Curriculum For Homeschooling

The 4th-grade homeschool curriculum continues what was left off in 3rd grade. You can teach the following information in your fourth-grade curriculum for homeschooling your child.

There are 4 basic subjects that a student must master in order to move up a grade.  These are Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.  Whenever it comes to fourth grade, the following things must be known within each of these subjects.

Math 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

One of the main subjects that must be taught in fourth grade is math.  Fourth-grade children are expected to know the following things about this subject:

  • Mastering addition and subtraction of numbers in the thousands
  • Understanding place value up to the hundred thousand place
  • Understanding multiplication and division
  • Memorizing times tables up to 12 X 12
  • Understanding fractions and how to add and subtract them
  • Mastering estimating and rounding numbers
  • Starting to learn about ratios
  • Starting to convert fractions to decimals
  • Learning basic angles
  • Mastering measurement
  • Reading mathematical information on various charts and graphs
  • The ability to place information on a chart or graph
  • Understanding word problems that contain extra information
  • The ability to write your own word problems
  • Reviewing time in hours and minutes (this was to have been mastered in third grade)
  • The ability to count money and give change
  • The ability to use a calculator
  • Reviewing less than and greater than

Language Arts 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Fourth grade children are also expected to receive instruction in Language Arts and thus master the following:

  • Reading books and then summarizing them
  • Reading books and comprehending the information that was read
  • Reading fourth grade readers fluently and with expression
  • Discussing whether or not they liked the book and telling you their reasoning
  • Beginning to recognize the different style of writers
  • The ability to use a dictionary and place words in alphabetical order
  • Learning 20 new spelling and vocabulary words per week
  • Understanding nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs
  • Using punctuation and capitalization correctly
  • The ability to write a rough draft, edit it and produce a final draft
  • Learning about different types of poems
  • The ability to create your own poem
  • Organizing stories and ideas into a beginning, middle and an ending
  • The ability to write a book report and to give an oral book report
  • The ability to come up with an opinion and back it up with facts
  • Beginning to read newspapers and then give a short oral report about it
  • Beginning to read plays and create a small one of their own

Science 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Whenever it comes time to teach fourth graders science, they are expected to master the following in their curriculum:

  • Understanding the scientific method
  • The ability to make predictions and come up with a hypothesis
  • Understanding classification systems and how they work than coming up with your own classification system
  • Mastering the forms of matter and how they change
  • Exploring chemicals and their reactions
  • Understanding the concepts of speed and force
  • Understanding heat and its conductors.
  • Explaining why an environment affects the life around it
  • Explaining how environmental changes take place
  • Understanding the physical properties of earth’s resources
  • Understanding the water cycle
  • Understanding erosion
  • Learning the classifications of clouds and what each type of cloud means
  • Learning how weather is predicted and trying to predict it yourself using the proper resources
  • Discussing what causes hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms
  • Understanding safety measures that should be taken before doing science experiments
  • The ability to recognize what natural resource an object came from
  • Understanding pollution and what can be done about it
  • Observing the effects that pollution has on plant and animal life in the ocean

Social Studies Forth 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

For social studies, fourth graders are expected to learn the following:

  • Understanding citizenship and an individual’s rights
  • Completing at least one community service project
  • Researching another culture and learning about its customs, foods, clothing and music
  • Getting a pen pal from another culture so that they can learn more about the culture from that person
  • Discussing immigration and emigration
  • Researching where your family originally came from
  • Discussing the factors that led individuals to leave their hometown and settle in a new land
  • Mastering maps, map keys and the symbols that they use
  • The ability to use a globe
  • The ability to identify all 7 continents
  • The ability to identify all 4 oceans
  • The ability to point out the equator, prime meridian, International dateline, tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn
  • Reviewing supply and demand
  • Pointing out what makes up an economic system
  • The ability to tell what the 3 branches of government are and what their responsibility is
  • Discussing the different levels of government
  • Listing local government leaders
  • Giving a report on your family’s traditions
