The Veloway Austin

Veloway Park Austin TX

The Veloway, located in South Austin, is a 3.1-mile paved pathway that is exclusive to bikers and rollerbladers. At 23 feet wide – about the width of a two-lane road – this path is perfect for children who have just learned to ride a bike, as well as adults who have recently acquired clips for the first time.

My son had been riding his bike for some time until he got into a nasty accident recently. He pulled out onto a street without looking and only then noticed a truck barreling down toward him. Fortunately, he walked away with minor scrapes and bruises, but he was understandably scared afterward and reluctant to get back on a bike. The Veloway proved to be the perfect solution; he could ride it without fear of traffic, and go as slow or fast as he wanted. After less than fifty feet on the trail, he asked if they could go faster!

The Veloway is a great place for cyclists of all levels, from the novice or inexperienced rider to the more experienced recreational biker. It offers a tranquil, car-free environment, allowing cyclists to ride without worrying about traffic and other hazards associated with roads. Additionally, its loop shape makes it easy for riders to figure out where they are and how much distance they’ve traveled.

Unexpected Obstacles: Squirrels

Though it may not seem like the most dangerous of threats, Veloway riders have learned over time that something far smaller than a car can present a potentially significant danger: squirrels! These small rodents have been known to dart across the course unexpectedly, making them a silly but still real danger.

Ideal for Building Skills

The Veloway isn’t completely flat and “easy,” but its mild inclines and curves make it ideal for building riding skills. On weekends when the weather is favorable, the Veloway fills up with recreational cyclists and parents helping their kids gently learn the ropes. During quieter days—and particularly on cold or rainy ones—the Veloway provides cyclists with a great opportunity for faster training, as well as cornering practice.

A Venue for Any Species of Bike

Finally, what really sets Veloway apart is its acceptance of virtually every type of bike. Along with roller skates and inline skates, riders can bring any variety of two-wheeled inventions—unicycles, tri bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, recumbents—you name it! The Veloway truly is a venue for everyone.

Tips and Thoughts

Safety First: Walkers are not allowed on the Veloway, so if your child is just learning how to ride a bike, begin somewhere else. An empty parking lot or a slight grassy hill are recommended starting points – the hill will help them move forward and the grass will cushion their falls. Once your child has developed the skill of biking, the Veloway is ideal for continued practice.

Biker Etiquette: Keep in mind that the Veloway is used by more experienced bikers who may be training for races. Stick to the right (inside) side of the track, practice patience, and you should be alright!

Navigation Tips: The trail is a 3-mile loop that can be shortened to 1 or 2 miles if desired. There is one steep hill around mile two, so first-time bikers may want to stick to the 1 mile loop near the entrance of the Veloway. Don’t forget to bring water – there is usually a working water fountain at the site, but investing in a small bike water carrier is always helpful.

Start your biking journey on the Veloway today! With its width, safety, and scenic views, it provides an amazing opportunity for beginners and seasoned riders alike.
