How to Remove Urine Stains & Smell from Mattresses

How to Remove Urine Stains & Smell From Mattress

This step-by-step how to remove pee stains and smell from mattress is guaranteed to get those old and new smells remove from your mattress.

Consider me the EXPERT at this subject. I recently potty trained our twins, so I know what’s up. I keep the mattress protectors on all of our mattresses except for my daughter’s. She potty trained almost over night and I didn’t even think to put one on it. Basically I forgot, until she had her first accident. I eventually found the easiest way to remove pee stains and smell from mattress.

When I made this recipe, I doubled it only because I noticed multiple stains and wanted to use it on some additional chairs. It does NOT keep. I sat mine down on a table and it spewed out all over the table and floor. Made a huge mess. I say all this to make the point to only make enough for the one application.

This recipe only uses 3 ingredients:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Baking Soda
  • Liquid Dish Soap
  • Spray Bottle (obviously)

Instructions: Remove Urine Smell & Stains from Mattress

First off, measure out 8 oz of hydrogen peroxide which is half a bottle. This stuff is super cheap! Only $1 at target (stock up).

Next, add 3 tablespoons of baking soda. I made a make shift funnel from a paper plate. It is very helpful to have a real one. I couldn’t find mine. Shocker.

The last step is adding a few drops of liquid dish soap. My mom has instilled the power of Dawn, so I typically always use it when making cleaning solutions. Other brands I adore are here, and here. Gently swirl this solution to activate the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Now that your solution is complete, let’s move on to the application! There are only 3 steps to remove pee stains and SMELL from mattress:

  1. First, apply the solution to the mattress making sure to saturate.
  2. Next, relax and allow the solution to dry completely using a fan or open window to expedite the process.
  3. Finally, vacuum up the remaining baking soda residue once the mattress has dried.

I was shocked at how there was no more odor! I thought for sure if I stuck my nose down there I would smell it! To finish off, I usually spray the mattress and her linens with my easy fabric refresher.
